I’ve always loved this time of year. Autumn is such a special time. The changing leaves, the smells and the crisp, cool air have always been energizing to me. So, in a continuing quest to enjoy the seasonal foliage, I set out to do some hiking in the Great River Bluffs State Park along the Mississippi River in southeast Minnesota. As the name suggests, this park features rolling hills and steep bluffs with panoramic views of the river. The drive to the park was clear and sunny. When I arrived, the river and the surrounding hills were partially covered in fog. As I walked the trails I was mesmorized by the fog shrouded forests. Mixed with the autumn colors it gave the surroundings a mysterious and ethereal quality.

Later, as the sun rose higher in the sky, I was treated to some amazing sunbeams breaking through the fog. They are a little tricky to photograph but I gave it my best shot.

Through most of the day the views of the river were totally obscured by the fog. Eventually things cleared up and the views that the park is known for became visible.

This was my first visit to Great River Bluffs State Park but it definately won’t be my last. It’s a wonderful park with lots of hiking trails and plenty to see. I highly reccommend it.
