One of the fun things that one encounters when driving across America is unusual, funny, interesting, educational and sometimes downright wierd roadside attractions. I find them irresistable. While driving through the small town of Gage, Oklahoma this Brontosaurus made entirely of tire rims caught my eye. I had to stop and snap a picture.
Then there are attractions where one can learn some interesting history. When the U.S. first started air mail service in the 1920s pilots did not have any kind of navigation equipment like radar and GPS. Think biplanes. So the Department of Commerce constructed a series of lighted towers and concrete arrows to guide pilots on their route. Some of them can still be seen today, like this one that I photographed in southwest New Mexico.

I came across this one just outside of Caldwell, Kansas. It’s called “Ghost Riders of the Chisholm Trail”. It consists of sculptures on what was the actual Chisholm Trail which was one of the main routes for cattle drives in the old west. I also photographed the signs that explain the display and also the history of the Chisholm Trail. It’s all very interesting.

There are so many interesting things to discover along the biways of America. The key – stay off the interstate highways as much as possible.
